Earl Nephi Avis, 67, died peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with ALS. He resided at 4907 Country Club Drive in Highland, Utah at the time of his death.


Earl was born April 8, 1933 in Salt Lake City to James Lester and Alice Gledhill Avis.


He married Sharon Rose Webb on January 5, 1955; divorced. He married Dorothy Lou Jensen on October 3, 1964; divorced. He married Alice Goates Watts on August 17, 1995.


Earl graduated from South High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He served as a Salt Lake City Police Officer for 25 years, and with the U. S. Marshall Service.


He was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many callings.


He loved rides with his wife and friends, family gatherings, vacations, gardening, and ballroom dancing at the Apollo Hall and Murray Arts Center.


He had a great love for his family and will be greatly missed.


Earl is survived by his wife, Alice; sons, Dan (Kelly) and Rod (Stephanie); daughters, Karree Bradford, Janet, Laura, Lynie (Daniel) Fraga; brother, Kenneth (Deanna); sisters, Alice (Tommy) Smith; Jean Bittler, Lillian (Eckhardt) Prawitt; Pauline (Curt) Hood; and seven grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Joseph, and infant son, David.


Funeral Services will be held in the Country Club Ward Chapel, 5212 West Country Club Drive, Highland, on Saturday, March 17, 2001 at noon. Friends and family may call at Lake Hills Memorial Park, 10055 South State Street, Sandy, on Friday, March 16, 2001 between 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at the Church on Saturday between 10:30-11:45 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment: Lake Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, Sandy, UT.
