TOVEY - James Gilbert "Gib" Best, 94, of Tovey died at 1:25 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at St. John's Hospital.
He was born Sept. 18, 1915, in Rochester, the son of George Henry and Mary M. (Robb) Best. He married Reba Smith on Dec. 10, 1935, in Taylorville; she preceded him in death on July 7, 2009.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Michael Sheldon; three brothers, Henry Edward Best, Glen William Best and Raymond Best; and four sisters, Velma M. Sears, Helen Marie Sadler, Dorothy Tolliver, and Mary Snyder.
He is survived by two sons, Larry LeRoy (wife, Becky Jean) Best of Springfield and Jerry LaVern (wife, Jean Kay) Best of Tovey; two daughters, Beverly JoAnn (husband, William) Bowsher of Pawnee and Marilyn Louise (husband, Stanford) Sheldon of Taylorville; grandchildren, James Bowsher, Julie Szabo, Jolynn Anderson, Jan Bowsher, Les Brian Sheldon, Chet Sheldon, Jerry Best, Larry Best, Mickey Best, Kirsty Ames, Jerry M. Best and Reba R. Best; 19 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Gib was a retired minister at Assembly of God Church and coal miner at Peabody coal for 42 1/2 years. He was a member of Pawnee Assembly of God Church. He was a former deacon and elder and was also a member of the Senior Citizens Bible Group.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Pawnee Assembly of God Church in Pawnee. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at the church, with Pastor A.B. Bennett and the Rev. Mickey Best officiating. Burial will be at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Taylorville.
