She was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Avoca. Esther attended Valley #2 Country School, and graduated from Avoca High School in 1933. On March 10, 1937, Esther married Harris James Heft in Avoca. The couple farmed east of Hancock, Iowa, where they enjoyed all aspects of farming life, especially working cattle and doing vegetable and flower gardening. Esther established a babysitting service and cared for many ill people over the years. Harris and Esther moved to Avoca in the fall of 1999. In recent years, Esther had resided at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center.
