He was a farmer and laborer who owned approximately 250 acres of land in the area where Cummington, Worthington, and Peru join boundaries. On 23 February 1898 he married Jennie L. Reed of Cummington; they had one surviving child, Ruth A. Stone Reed Nevins, later of Springfield, Massachusetts. (Another daughter, Gladys Mildred Stone, was born 7 September 1902, but died before 1910.) Jennie was granted a divorce from John (on grounds of intoxication, physical abuse, and non-support) and custody of the children on 15 December 1902. John lost his land the following year when it was sold at sheriff's auctions to his former wife in payment of $400 court-ordered alimony. "Bert" thereafter lived in Worthington, working at odd jobs until his death. His ex-wife moved away and sold off the land on 11 May 1910.

Stone, 69, who was taken to Cooley Dickinson hospital [Northampton] suffering from the effects of a shock about ten days ago, died Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock [13 February]. Burial was Monday [15 February] at 2 o'clock at the North cemetery [Worthington]. Rev. J. Herbert officiated.
