A New York dispatch says: last evening at the Leroy mansion, New Rochelle, just above New York died Caroline Webster, the widow of Daniel Webster. The stately old lady had been seriously ill only about a fortnight, although she had been gradually failing for a year from advancing years. She was confined to her bed by an attack of rheumatic fever, which soon developed into pneumonia. As there was every indication that it was to be the venerable lady's last sickness her physicians notified her surviving relatives and they came to the old fashioned mansion.
The patient's death was perfectly painless and it seemed to those who passed the last hour at her bedside rather as if she had fallen asleep than died. At the bedside were the brothers of the deceased lady, Daniel Leroy and William Henry Leroy; Mrs. Jacob Leroy, her sister in law and Mr. Robert Edgar. The funeral will take place Wednesday morning from Trinity Church, New Rochelle and the body be buried at Woodland Cemetery.

Her father was the late Herman Leroy, head of the once famous commercial house of Leroy, Bayard, McKiven & Co., who had a large trade in different parts of the world. Mr. Leroy was also the first Holland Consul to the United States. Mrs. Webster's mother was Hannah Cornell, daughter of the last royal Attorney General of the State of North Carolina. It was at her father's house, 76 Broadway, then one of the fashionable centres of the city that in 1828 she was first introduced to Daniel Webster, the Senator from Massachusetts. Those conversational abilities which had charmed so many of the visitors in her father's house soon captivated the distinguished Senator and after only a few months courtship he married her.
The ceremony was performed in Grace Church, February 1829, in the presence of a large and fashionable assemblage. In 1839 she went to Europe with Webster and traveled through England and Scotland. During her sojourn in England she dined with Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle and was also a guest of the Duke of Wellington and other distinguished members of the aristocracy. After Mr. Webster's death 100 citizens of Boston contributed $1,000 each to a fund of $100,000 which was invested for his widow's benefit and the interest of this she received regularly, although she inherited enough property from her father to fully supply her needs.
