Joseph and his brother Thomas Green Alvey and posiible brothers, Robert and John Alvey migrated to Nelson Co, KY in the early to mid 1780's from Maryland via Virginia where John and Robert were married. It is believed that Joseph and Thomas Green Alvey both married in St Mary's Co, MD. Joseph married Ann "Nancy" Riney, daughter of Thomas Edward Riney, I and Elizabeth Maraman about 1783. Thomas Green Alvey's first two wives are unknown but his last two wives, he married in Nelson Co, KY.

Joseph is believed to be buried in St Rose Catholic Cemetery in Springfield, Washington Co, KY but no hard evidence has been found and his will of 1803 from Washington Co, KY does not mentioned his place of burial. His wife Ann eventually migrated to Grayson Co, KY with her children and is most likely buried in St Augustine Catholic Cemetery in Grayson Co, KY.
