James A. Gallagher, 82, of 33 Mann Street, retired carpenter and former building contractor, died in City Hospital.

He also served a term as alderman from Ward 4.

He operated his own contracting business at one time and prior to his retirement was general foreman with the John Buckley Contracting Co.

He was born in Houlton, ME., son of the late Frank J. and Theresa (McElhenney) Gallagher. He had lived in Worcester 80 years.

At the time of his death he left two sons, Frank J. and Leonard J. Gallagher, both of Worcester; three daughters, Miss Marion E. Gallagher, Katherine L., wife of Raymond Tougas, and both of this city, and Elizabeth M., known in religious life as Sister Mary Loreto of the Sisters of Mercy, assigned to St. Paul's Convent, High Street; two sisters, Miss Mary T. Gallagher of Roxbury and Mrs. Gertrude M. Larkin of Leicester; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue, with a solemn high mass in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery.
