Augusta Eagle, Augusta, Illinois - October 27, 1892

Solomon West was born in Burlington, Conn., April 7, 1821, and died at his home in Augusta, IL., October 18, 1892, aged 71 years, 6 months and 11 days. In 1843 he was married to Miss Harriet Bicknell in Boston, Mass. To them were born three sons and one daughter. The wife and sons are still living, the daughter dying a few years ago. At the age of 17 Brother West was converted and joined the M.E. Church and has ever since been a faithful and devoted member, having filled all the offices that layman hold in that church. He was a class leader of the Augusta Society at the time of his death. His Christian character was above reproach. All recognized in him a follower of Christ. Through his long protracted sickness, he was patient and loving, living every moment resigned to the will of God. As a father, he ever yearned for the welfare of his children, but most of all he will be missed by the now bereaved companion with whom he has trod life's battle for nearly half a century. His only regret at quitting the shores of time was the leaving of her who shared his sucesses and failures, his joys and sorrows along life's journey. But leaving a testimony behind that all was well, he closed his eyes to this world and in the day dawn of eternity will be found watching for the loved ones he has left behind. The funeral services were conducted at the residence in Augusta by the Rev. J.B. Horneey, after which the body was interred in the Huntsville cemetery.
