Miss Catherine Anderson was born Nov. 3, 1848, in Ohio, and died at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. Charley Miller five miles north of Ionia, Saturday, July 3, 1920, 4:00 p.m.

She was married to Edwin R. Hoag, April 22, 1869. Nine children, six sons and three daughters, came to make glad the hearts of these fond parents. The five living children, Winton S.; Earnest A.; Mary G., wife of J. C. Stansbery; Clara B, wife of C. H. Miller, and John W. all reside in Jewell county and were present at her funeral.

Mrs. Hoag came to Kansas with her husband in 1870, spending one year in Jackson county. The following year they homesteaded on Ash Creek about four miles northeast of Ionia, Jewell county. Here she lived continuously until she moved to Jewell City some fifteen years ago. Thus it will be seen that she lived half a century in the commonwealth of the “SunflowerState.” She was proud of the achievements of Kansas and Jewell county, of which we all know that she as a wife, mother and citizen contributed her share. She knew what toil, sacrifice and deprivation, incident to pioneer life, meant, for she had experienced them all. Prior to her marriage to Mr. Hoag she was engaged in public school work and was therefore capable of sharing the business and social responsibilities of life with him. Early in life she accepted of Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, transferring her membership to the Methodist Class at Ionia in the spring of 1873 where it remained until the Chief Shepherd called her to the church triumphant which is without fault before the throne of God. It may be truthfully said that to her children and grandchildren she left as a legacy the memory of a noble, well-lived life, and a fine Christian character.

Funeral services were conducted from what was formerly the Methodist church of Ionia, Sunday, July 4, at 4:00 p. m. The choir rendered appropriate music, using the Methodist hymnal. Beautiful flowers in abundance rested upon the casket. A former neighbor and pastor, L. B, Tremain. officiated. Thus with children, grand children, sympathizing friends and neighbors, her body was taken to the Ionia cemetery and laid to rest by the side of those who had preceded her.
