Parents: Charles and Eleonora J. Hotz Grill, both born in Illinois
Siblings: Orville, Gertrude (Gertie) and Mildred (Mil)
Wife: Elsie Theresa Post (divorced)
Child: Lawrence Eugene Grill
Wife: Janie Kathryn Osborn
Child: Charles Minard Grill (adopted)

Carl was my stepfather; he married my mother in 1950 when I was 11 years old. He was from Illinois ("foreign" to a child of the south) and had been all over the world. He told me about China and the Orient, introduced me to jazz and chili and Catholicism, and made me aware of other ideas and "isms" beyond my own world. He was a complicated man but he was good and honest and decent - and he had a wicked sense of humor!

Carl retired from the US Navy after 21 years of service. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea.
