Melvin R. Luoma, 69, Grand Rapids, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at Itasca Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 26, 1928, at Trout Lake, the son of Eino and Lillian (Kinnunen) Luoma, and grew up and attended schools in the Trout Lake area. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1941 until 1945. He married Harriet Bloom in 1966 in Grand Rapids. He worked various jobs as a laborer and machinist and was a member of the McVeigh-Dunn No. 60 American Legion of Grand Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet; three daughters, Kathy Olson, Warba, Phyllis Leach, Telford, Tenn., and Gail Winger, Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sons, Steve Luoma, Bovey, and Randy Luoma, Aberdeen, Wash.; three sisters, Minerva Mahn, Grand Rapids, Muriel Larson, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Maxine Daniels, Bovey; a brother, Marvin Luoma, Grand Rapids; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a son, Jerry Bloom, in 1967.
Funeral: Tuesday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at Rowe Funeral Home with the Rev. James Spaid officiating.
Burial: Itasca-Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.
