Cleofe was born in the beautiful coffee-growing region of Jayuya,Puerto Rico in 1915. His parents were Raimundo Burgos and Julia Olmeda. When he was a young man, he ran away with the beautiful Magdalena Rios, the daugher of a wealthy coffee planter. Because Magdalena's parents did not approve of their relationship, she was estranged from her family for many years. Cleofe and Magdalena were the parents of three children: Iris, Cleofe,Jr. and Augustine. Magdalena died in the 1940's, leaving behind a widower with three young children. Augustine was then raised by his grandmother, Julia Burgos. Iris and Cleofe, Jr. remained with their father. Cleofe's second marriage to Concepcion Dominguez ("Conchita") produced one more child: Eve Burgos. Cleofe had a long, successful career as an salesman of Ford automobiles. As his grandson, I remember him being a very affectionate grandpa. He loved to tell ghost stories and about his adventures as a little boy in the Puerto Rican countryside. Even as an older gentleman, he was very handsome with fair skin and bright blue eyes. I remember he used to wear black "garters" to hold up his socks. His trousers had a little nitch for a pocket-watch. The best words to describe him are: cheerful, affectionate, kind-hearted, and ready to help out others in need. His daughter, Iris remembers that he would donate food to the poor. He is loved and missed. (This bio was written by his grandson, Samuel Ramirez--son of Iris Burgos Ramirez).
