Susannah Maldarin Lee was the daughter of Samuel Austin Lee and Mary Hackney. The Lee-Hackney families were among the early settlers of the Quaker community in Blount County, Tennessee, originally known as Newbury and later, Friendsville. Samuel and Mary Lee migrated to southwest Missouri about 1835 and settled in Polk County where they were living at the time of the 1840 census. Records indicate that they moved to Greene County in 1843 and were living in Robberson Township in 1850. After Samuel's death in 1853 Susannah, her mother and her younger sister, Louisa, resided with her older brother Richard Ishmael Lee. Several of her other siblings migrated to California by wagon train in the mid-1850's. She married George W. McLain January 22, 1871, in Greene County, Missouri. George W McLain was born in Indiana and lived there until after the Civil War. He served in Co. D, 116th Indiana Regiment of Infantry being discharged March 1, 1864, at the rank of sergeant in Lafayette, Indiana. He was living in Missouri in 1870. George and Susannah were parents of three children: Augusta Jane (1874-1964); Mary Brucilda (1875-1965) and George Luther (1878-1951). In the fall of 1879 George and Susannah McLain moved to Vernon County, Missouri. George was a farmer and as a farmer's wife, Susannah tended her garden, preserved and dried fruits and vegetables and attended to her family's needs. About 1883 George began working for the Fort Scott (Kansas) Marble Works. Susannah wrote in a letter to her sister Louisa Thompson in August, 1883, that "a week ago yesterday I took a car ride 5 miles to Ellis and back" and "for the fun I took a trip to Scott this summer". Her husband George became ill and in September 1899 he was admitted to the US National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Leavenworth, Kansas, where he died on January 1, 1900. His personal effects were shipped to Susannah in Nevada, Missouri, on January 21, 1900. Susannah died May 4, 1908 and is buried in the El Dorado Springs cemetery along with the other members of her family.
