KEESEVILLE -- Helen J. Burk, 96, of Route 22, Keeseville, N.Y., died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at the Meadowbrook Healthcare Center in Plattsburgh.
She was born in Peekskill, N.Y., July 19, 1912, to Simon P. and Helen M. (Bouton) McAuliffe. Her family resided primarily in Brewster and Croton Falls, N.Y. She married Levi Burk on Feb. 14, 1944; they lived in Oregon and Ohio before returning to New York State. They moved to Peru, N.Y., in 1955 and to Keeseville in 1959, where she resided until her death.
She loved her family and was a devout Catholic. She volunteered for the American Cancer Society and the Girl Scouts of America and was a poll worker on election days. Her hobbies included a lifelong love of reading, caring for stray cats, bingo and watching the New York Yankees and golf. Her early work experience included working on Wall Street and she loved her last job at the Clark Forrence Insurance Agency for many years before retiring.
She is survived by loving nieces Peggyann Wright, Helen Smith, Karen Minton and Mary Hughes; and nephews Frank Smith, Alan Minton, David Smith, John Hughes and Phillip Smith and their families.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband; brother Thomas McAuliffe; and sisters Adelaide Minton, Harriet Smith and Maria Hughes; and niece Katherine Amo; and nephews James McAuliffe, Dale Minton and Thomas McAuliffe.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 124 Clinton St., Keeseville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Keeseville with Monsignor Leeward J. Poissant, pastor, celebrating. Burial will be Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Assumption Cemetery, 1055 Oregon Road, Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, the Elmore SPCA in Peru, N.Y., or the Keeseville Rescue Squad.
Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 124 Clinton St., Keeseville.
