Virginia N. Welty Bridges

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, in Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove for Virginia N. Welty Bridges, who died Nov. 7 at age 104.

Mrs. Bridges was born Jan. 18, 1896, in Burlington Junction, Mo., and was raised in Arcadia, Neb. Her maiden name was Welty. She taught in a one-room school in Nebraska for four years and then moved to Portland in 1934, where she was a field worker and owned a restaurant in Multnomah for two years. About 1937, she moved to Gaston, where she was a turkey farmer. She moved to Forest Grove about 1940, and was a licensed practical nurse for the Masonic and Eastern Star Home for 20 years and for other homes until retiring about 1980. After retiring, she cared for the elderly in her home. She was a member of Forest Grove First Christian Church. In 1918, she married Iven C. Bridges; he died in 1945.

Survivors include her son, J. Leo; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren. Her daughter, Myrtle "Sis" Thrush, died in 1991, and her son, Robert, died in 1998.

The family suggests remembrances to the women's ministry of her church. Arrangements are by Forest Grove Memorial Chapel.
