Of Dover, DE, died Wednesday, September 20, 2006, at Kent General Hospital after a short illness. She was 89.
Most recently she had been a resident of the Heritage Assisted Living. Mrs. Behen was born March 1, 1917 in Harrington, DE and graduated from Harrington High School, Class of 1936. She then attended Beacom College in Wilmington, where she traveled each day by train from Harrington. After college, she worked for the Corporation Department, State of Delaware. She was next employed by Farmer Bank in Dover and was the first female in the state to be appointed bank manager. Gov. Russell Peterson appointed her to the State Personnel Commission, another first for a woman in the state, and she was re-appointed for a second term. She was a former member of Soroptomist International of Dover and volunteered with "Adopt a Family" at Christmas. She was a member of the Quarter Century Club of Banking, and a former member of the Round Table Club of Wyoming. Mrs. Behen found so much delight in encouraging young people to succeed and was so devoted to those she loved and the causes in which she believed. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed life, her family and friends. Sarah took great pride in her home and yard, and loved the birds and animals she fed. She was also known for her terrific fudge.
Her husband, former State Senator William Behen, died in 1976. She was also predeceased by her parents, William and Lillian McCabe; and a brother, William "Bill" McCabe. She is survived by many who were blessed to have been called her friend and the many customers she served at the bank.
