A note should be added to this memorial that there is NO evidence for Elizabeth being the same Elizabeth Vaughan born to Hannah Crew and William Shields Vaughan, and therefore the date of birth may be in error. :)

It's entirely possible that there were two Elizabeth Vaughans born in 1755 in Virginia - and at this time, a similar birthdate and possibly some similar names are the only basis for believing the two Elizabeths to be the same. Furthermore, in her pension application, Elizabeth Vaughan Preston indicates she was born ~1759-1760, a record just as valid as the 1840 census that is the source of her ~1755 birthdate.

The Elizabeth Vaughan who was a daughter of William Shields Vaughan was reported as marrying out of unity in May 1780 (Hinshaw, 6:216). Elizabeth Vaughan Preston repeatedly states in her pension application (and has witnesses state) that she married Nathaniel Preston in August 1780. There could be a reason for this discrepancy, but until more evidence is presented, it is irresponsible to conflate these two women.

(Many people note that William Shields Vaughan left a will in Charles City County Will Book, volume 1, page 73, and yet no one seems to have seen it. If the will provides the much-longer-for link to the Prestons, someone surely would have mentioned this by now, but hope springs eternal!)
