Elizabeth was the third child of Harry Edwin Wells and Elizabeth Rebecca Tisdell. The family lived in Binghamton, New York until about 1922 when her parents decided to move to Los Angeles, California for a better life. The family, along with one of her mother's sisters, drove across country in a Franklin touring car. Back in those days this wasn't an easy thing to do. When they arrived, they made their home in Whittier, California.
