Clayton Allen Hubbs died quietly in his home in Amherst,MA surrounded by hid family,the morning of March 29,2007.Clyton was born June 25,1937 near Warsaw,Mo at the home of his parents,Harley and Sally Cochran Hubbs.
Clay was a graduate of Warsaw High School,received a BS degree in Agricultural Journalism in 1958,University of Missouri,MA in Journalism University of Missouri,1963,Ma English Literature,University of Missouri,1964, PhD in English Literature, 1970,University of Washington, 1970, Publisher and Editor Transitions Abroad Magazine,1977-2003,Senior Editor 2003-2007.
Clayton served as Public Information Officer in the US Air Force in England after receiving his commission and flight training.
Clay Hubbs career combined his love of travel with his knowledge of literature and journalism. After completing graduate studies. Clay worked as a journalist in Europe for four years and spent the following year traveling through Africa and the Middle East.
his PhD work took him back to Europe and then in 1972 he joined the faculty of Hampshire College,Amberst,MA,where he taught literature until 1987.He then served as college advisor on international studies while editing Transitioms Abroad Magazine which he had founded in 1977.
Clay spent summer in travel and bought a house in Tuscany,Italy in 1980 to which he returned each year. In 2003 he retired from full time work on the magazine when he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and fought his dread cancer for four years. He is survived by his wife ,Joanna His son Gregory,His daughter Victoria,His sister Freda Ranspot and brother Jack Hubbs,and three grandchildren Micael,Ryan and Jesse Clay.
