Houghton, the son of Francis Egerton Smith and Eliza Ann Currier, was educated at Dow Academy, Franconia NH, and graduated from the University of Maryland, 1903. He was a practicing physician in Trenton, New Jersey for 40 years, retiring in 1942, moving to New Hampshire and then Massachusetts. He died June 13 1954 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law Dr. Maurice E. and Margaret Crozer (Smith) Bates, North Amherst, Mass. (Obituary, Springfield Union,, Springfield, MA, June 14 1954).

He was a descendant of Mayflower passenger Gov. William Bradford on his father's side.
