Her father was a section foreman for the Rock Island Railroad and worked out of Rock Falls. Her parents moved to Cedar Falls, because of a transfer on the RR, in 1923, where Genevieve finished her schooling, graduating from Cedar Falls High School in 1932. The family then moved to Vinton, Iowa, and she worked at the Vinton Produce for two years, then at Hodges Variety Store. When her parents were transferred to Waterloo, Iowa in 1939, she and her younger sister went also. She worked at Grant's Dept. Store and Sears Roebuck & Co. until she was married. She met Don Armstrong through mutual friends, and they were married at her parents' home on 28 Dec. 1947, with family and close friends present.

Genevieve and Don had a love of art in Common. Don had attended the Art Institute of Kansas City following his discharge from the navy in WW II and Genevieve had taken some art courses. She took up a hobby of painting plates for special occasions, and these can still be seen among family members. They also traveled and kept scrapbooks of their trips.
