Irene Lewis Adkins, 82, of 8545 US Highway 29 North, Blairs, VA, died Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for the past year. Born in Pelham, NC, she was the daughter of the late James Preston Lewis & Betty Ann Cook Lewis. She was married to Oscar Fuller Adkins, Sr. who died in 1977. Mrs. Adkins lived most of her life in the Blairs community and was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church for 49 years. She had been employed at Dan River Mills and owned and operated R. N. Adkins and Sons grocery store in Blairs, VA. She is survived by two sons, Charles Wayne Adkins of Blairs and Robert Thomas "Bob" Adkins of the residence; a grandson, Ottoway Fuller Adkins of Dry Fork; two sisters, Viola Lewis Day of Raleigh, NC and Annie Lewis Day of Ringgold, VA; two daughters-in-law, Susie Custer Adkins of Blairs and Phyllis Hearp Adkins of Dry Fork and two sisters-in-law, Mary Adkins Atkins of Dry Fork and Virginia Adkins Carter of Blairs. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sons, William Lewis "Bill" Adkins and Oscar Fuller Adkins, Jr. and three brothers, James Wesley Lewis, Willie D. Lewis and Harold E. Lewis. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sandy Wright and the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence, 8545 US Highway 29 North, Blairs, VA. Swicegood Funeral Home is serving the Adkins family.
