The death of H W Dodson, Sayre grocery merchant, at 9:00am on Sunday March 29, was a shock to this entire community. While Mr. Dodson had been critically ill for the past two weeks, few people knew about it until after he had passed away at the Tisdal Hospital that morning, his death being caused from gangrene after surgery to remove his appendix. (Copier's note; no antibiotics in 1931) Although local Doctors did everything they possibly could do to save his life.

Mr. Dodson had spent most of his life in Western Oklahoma having moved to a farm in the Dempsey community from Hawkins County, Tennessee as a young man, in 1905. On November 25, 1908 he married Miss Rebecca Parman also from the Dempsey community. The couple lived in that community until moving to Sayre a few years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Dodson entered the grocery business in a building just south of the high school nearly four years ago. They remained there until they sold the business to Mr.
J B Puckett, last summer. The Dodsons then opened a new grocery store on Main street just east of the Brown Furniture store, where they enjoyed a good business. Recently the store was moved to a new location on fourth street and it was about this time that Mr. Dodson became ill.

Mr. Dodson is survived by his wife, Mrs Rebecca Dodson, and by three children, Miss. Willa who is a Junior at Southwestern Teacher's College at Weatherford, Hubert, who is a senior in Sayre high school and Miss. Jewell in grade school. Other relatives are his mother, Mrs. HW Dodson, his brothers, Fred, Clyde and Dewey and sister Bea who lives in West Texas. Mr. Dodson was member of First Christian Church and was active in Rotary.

Funeral services were held at First Christian Church on Monday with Rev. A J Bradshaw preaching the service and a large choir composed of members of all churches furnishings the music. In respect for their town man all merchants closed their places of business during the service and practically all of them attended the service. The pallbearers were fellow Rotarians. They were Rev. T N Weeks, E F Cornels, A M Cliff, Earl Littrell, Joe T Brickell and RA Troxel.

Burial was at Dempsey Cemetery beside his father. Because of bad roads interment could not be until Wednesday morning. Littrell and Moore were in charge.
(Copier's note, several years after the Dempsey burial, his wife, Rebecca, had his remains moved to Sayre Doxey Cemetery)
