"John Stein, later of Pine Grove, Schuylkill County; baptized December 9, 1731, Hoppstadten; died November 10, 1810; buried at St. Jacob's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove; married May 19, 1755, Rehrersburg, Maria Barbara Gebhardt. They had eleven children." (S.G. Stein III, The Steins of Muscatine, A Family Chronicle; Privately Printed 1962, pages 25-26)

"Tombstones in the Coleman Cemetery tell that Catharina, the first wife of Frederick Schwalm, was the daughter of Peter Stein and that Peter was the son of Johannes and Barbara Stein. Johannes had been born in Germany; he was baptised in Hoppenstadten; came to America; and married Barbara Gebhart. They settled near Pine Grove and had 11 children. Simon G. Stein III, a cousin of Catharina Schwalm's descendants, gives details of his ancestors in a very readable short family history. The earliest known one was possibly Philip, of Udencappeln, who married Margaretha Gotz. They probably were the parents of Best (Sebastian) who married an Anna Catherine and had a son, Johann Heinrich, baptized August 30, 1663 at Udencappeln. The son married Anna Elizabeth Buffi, a daughter of Peter Buffi of Schweinscheid, and their son, Johann Sebastian, who was born March 24, 1696 at Kappeln near Grumbach, married Anna Catherine Arnoldt. She had been baptized at Hoppstadten on October 9, 1696. The villages are in the Palatinate between the Lahe and Glan Rivers. It was a Protestant district that had been repeatedly fought over during and after the Thirty Years' War. It was probably the recent engagements of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) that made Sebastian decide to take his family to America. In the spring of 1748 he sold his farm, buildings, forage, and implements for 1200 guldens and 25 florins. He had to pay a tax of ten percent on the net amount and 34 florins for a release to emigrate. They sailed from Rotterdam on the EDINBURGH, arriving in Philadelphia in September. On the 5th the men signed the required Oath of Allegiance; Sebastian and Peter wrote their names and Abraham and Henry made their marks. Johannes did not sign; he was only 16 years old. An error crept into Simon's book that Johannes arrived on the TWO BROTHERS ten days after the rest of the family. It happened because the quoted author, Daniel Rupp, mistook the name, Johannes Neun written in German script, for Johannes Stein. Johannes and his family attended Jacob's Church near Pine Grove. The parish records show that he was a member of the building committee for the first structure in 1780 and that he was elected an Elder in 1803. He died November 24, 1810 and lies buried near the church. His wife is there too, having lived until May 24, 1825." (Johannes Schwalm, the Hessian; published by The Johannes Schwalm Historical Association; Precision Printers, Inc., Millville, Pennsylvania, 1976; page 100)

"The Peter Stein that Hannah Coleman married was born to Johannes and Barbara (Gebhardt) Stein, who lived in Tulpehocken area of Berks County. Johannes and Barbara (Gebhardt) Stein were married May 19, 1755 by Pastor Casper Stoever, who states that they were from Altalaha. Johannes and Barbara Stein had these other children: Jacob, M. Magdalena, Anna Cath, Maria Eve, Anna Margaretha, Maria Barbara, and Christophel." (The Gratz Historical Society, A Comprehensive History of the Town of Gratz, Pennsylvania; 1997; pages 323-324)
