JAY ASPER
Jay Asper of North Portland died of causes related to age Tuesday in his home. At his request, no service will be held. He was 91.

He was born April 16, 1899, in Downs, Kan., and had lived in the Portland area since 1909. At age 15, he went to work for Portland Manufacturing Co., and later worked for Western Cooperage. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War I. Mr. Asper worked at the Portland shipyards from 1918 until 1921, when he went for work for the Port of Portland as a maintenance mechanic. He retired in 1959.

He is survived by his daughter, Shirley Pearl Arvesen of Portland; stepson, William Barnes of Portland; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Private interment will be in Columbian Cemetery.
