F.K. HEIDER, PIONEER OF SHERIDAN, SUCCUMBS

SHERIDAN, March 19 - Fredrick K. Heider, 74, who was born Oct. 26, 1861, in the providence of Rhineland, Germany, died here Friday. He lived at Berscheid, Rhineland, with his parents until the age of 18 years when he came to this country, and lived a short time in Chicago and Cincinnati. At the age of 22 years he came to Portland and there followed his trade as a shoemaker, and about four years later he located at Sheridan where he has resided continuously. During this time he made one visit to his old home in Germany in 1921.

He married Miss Mary Gaunt in the year 1888, and to them were born four children, Raymond G. Heider of Klamath Falls, Otto W., and Virgil Heider of Sheridan and Lorena Mary Alexander of Hood River. Mrs. Heider died Feb. 6, 1897.

In October, 1900 he married Laura V. Penland and to this union was born two sons and one daughter, Clare of Dayton, Earl of Salem and Zelda at home. He also has been a father to Nell M. Scharschmidt of Grand Ronde and James G. Penland, Carlton, stepchildren. Their mother died May 9, 1935.

Mr. Heider served the city of Sheridan for many years as its city treasurer and as a member of the council and such service beginning shortly after Sheridan was incorporated. He also served four terms as school director.

He followed his trade as shoemaker in Sheridan for 35 years and during the last 15 years spent most of his time at farming. He had been a member of the local Methodist church, Sheridan Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges for almost half a century. He leaves 13 grandchildren.

The high esteem in which he was held was in evidence Sunday when services were held at the Methodist church where a large group of friends gathered to pay their last respects to a true friend and neighbor. Many beautiful floral tributes were also in evidence. Services were conducted by the Rev. W.S. Burgoyne. Interment was in the Masonic cemetery with the Masonic order in charge of the graveside services.

Among those from out-of-town who attended the funeral of the late F.K. Heider were, Miss Hester Hibbert and sister and husband, Earl Coburn, Urie Alderman all of Dayton, Mr. and Mrs. R.A. McInnis of Portland, Miss Glyde Dilley of Eatonville, Wash., G.T. Beck of Eugene, Mr. and Mrs. George Alexander and family of Hood River, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Heider and family of Salem, Mr. and Mrs. James Penland of Carlton, Clare Heider of Dayton, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Scharschmidt and family of Grand Ronde, Ross Neely of Portland, the Raymond Heider family of Klamath Falls, and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Coleman of Roseburg.
