"Roy Baker, the young colored boy who on Monday afternoon was thrown from a wagon drawn by a runaway horse and run over, died at 5 o'clock this morning from internal injuries. It was never believed even up to a short time before Baker's death that his injuries were serious or that he was more than bruised. Dr. Bragg who attended him stated yesterday that the boy's injuries were slight. Baker was probably about fifteen years of age. He was an orphan boy and Tom Pierpoint who keeps a grocery store at Main and Division street took him up and gave him a home and employed him to work at the store and deliver goods and paid him weekly wages. Roy, he said, was a good boy, but had a bad habit of fast and rough driving. Monday afternoon he was seen driving along Howard avenue. The horse was going at a gallop and the boy was lashing it with a brush. The horse ran into a post and Baker was thrown out. The wheels passed over his ribs and stomach. Baker was up and about the store yesterday. Last night he complained of not feeling so well. Several times in the night Pierpoint or Mrs. Pierpoint were up to see to him. He complained of pains in his stomach. At four o'clock when asked how he felt he said he didn't know. He died at 5 o'clock very suddenly and unexpectedly. Mr. Pierpoint said that he will see that the boy has a good funeral at his expense. The funeral will take place at 10:30 tomorrow afternoon(sic)."
