Verna E. (Strayer) Espenlaub, 85, Seaford, Del., formerly of 716 Valley View Blvd., Altoona, died early Monday morning at the Seaford Center. She was born in Naginey, Pa., daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Kuhn) Strayer. She married Joseph F. Espenlaub April 12, 1947, in Winchester, Va. He preceded her in death Aug. 1, 1989. Surviving are four children: George (Nancy) and Timothy (Elizabeth), both of Laurel, Md., Stephen (Mary) of Altoona and Mary June Norton (Michael) of Oakdale, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph F. Jr., in 1965; two sisters; and five brothers. Verna was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a former member of Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Altoona. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Altoona. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 927 Franklin St., Johnstown, PA 15905.
