"Ambrie felt the "Call of the Sea" and as a youth signed up on the crew of a freighter going down the coast through the Panama Canal and to New York. He found that he would not be able to return on the freighter in time to enroll in school, so he quit and was paid off in New York. He learned that the Canadian Pacific would take passengers from Montreal to Calgary for one half cent a mile. Before getting away from Montreal he was rolled and all his money taken. He had a terrible time getting home and had to wire for money.
Later he worked with Hetta at Chestnut Farm and went to Oregon State at Corvallis where he graduated in Agriculture and then came back to Chestnut Farm and worked with Hetta and became a partner and later took over the business which he had built up to a very successful enterprise with the help of Aunt Thelma.
As you remember, in days that you worked for him, he specialized in tomatoes and cucumbers and later he raised Azaleas which were sent by immense trucks as large as box cars, generally to Chicago where they were distributed to various cities throughout the Midwest and East. His orders came in a year and ofter two years in advance.
He leased the place for 10 years to a National Flower Growing Company and retired and he and Aunt Thelma traveled extensively. Soon after this he sold the place to Payless Drugs who gave him the use of his nice house for ten years rent free, tax free, and permission to move the house at any time. He found a fine acreage and started to improve it and this summer he moved the house to it. [Fruitland Road]"

He was born in Hood River. He lived in Portland before coming to Salem in 1916. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1924. He owned and operated Field & Bagley Greenhouses in Salem, retiring in 1965. He was a member of Emmanuel Bible Church.
Survivors include his daughters Ann Bagley of Salem and Lorraine Kelley of Yreka, Calif. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Barrick mortuary, Salem. Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in Salem Pioneer Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the church memorial fund.
