Medical Pioneer. She was Denver's first and only African American female doctor, from 1902 until the 1950's. Specializing in gynecology, obstetrics and pediatrics, she delivered more than 7,000 babies. She primarily helped immigrant and minority patients. By the time of her death, she could converse in seven different languages.African-American woman physician. Married Baptist minister John Ford in 1892, later moved to Chicago. Educated at the Hering Medical College, graduating in 1899. Worked briefly in Alabama, moving to Denver in 1902. Barred from working in the hospitals in Colorado or joining the Colorado Medical Association, she set up a private practice in her home in Five Points. Practiced for 50 years, often exchanging goods and services in lieu of payment in cash. Thought to have delivered almost 7 thousand babies during her career.
Divorced in 1915. Later married Alfred Allen.
In 1950 she was allowed to join the Colorado and American Medical Associations, and became a member of the Denver Medical Society, after which she was a physician in the Denver General Hospital. She continued to practice medicine up to 2 weeks before her death in October 1952.
Elected to the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 1985 and named a 'Medical Pioneer of Colorado' by the Colorado Medical Society in 1989.
