Bessie was born on her grandfather's plantation in Sunflower County, Mississippi on August 29, 1879, the daughter of John Sebry Burch of Chesterfield County, South Carolina, and Mary Lee (Molly) Johnson Burch, granddaughter of Capt. Francis (Frank) Johnson and Anne Elizabeth (Nancy) Sutton Johnson.

After her mother's death in 1898,, she moved to Webster County with her father, John Burch, stepmother Dora Starnes, sisters Ella, Myrtle, and brothers, Frank, John, Clarence.

There she married Thomas Walton Starnes of Webster County. They had three children, William Miller, Mary Lee, and Jennie.

When Thomas was killed in a lumber mill explosion, she married Rev. Burton Rawls, a local Methodist minister.


Bessie died Dec. 1933 in Clay County, Miss. of stomach cancer
