Son of William Cole and Lupira Spaulding. He was the 4th of their 10 children.

He married Cordelia Allen on 12 Dec 1841 in Buckfield, Maine. They had 6 children:

William was a railroad engineer. After the birth of their first 4 children in Maine, he moved the family to western New York state, where the twins, Frank and Francella, were born. In 1860, they lived in northeastern Pennsylvania and by 1865 were back in New York state. William helped to build the Buffalo Creek Railroad, a short line which mainly served the grain industry and its many grain elevators in South Buffalo, New York.
