He is best known for the 1980s comedy and teenager films "Sixteen Candles" (1984), "The Breakfast Club" (1985), "Weird Science" (1985), "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986) and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" (1987). He wrote the screenplays for the popular Christmas family comedies, "Home Alone" (1990) and "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" (1992). Raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and Northbrook, Illinois, Hughes was an advertising copywriter and later joke writer for Chicago-area comedians. A stint as editor of National Lampoon Magazine would lead to his Hollywood career.
