John Newman Newell,92 of Marshall, Mo. died Sunday, March 10,2002, at fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall
Born Aug. 26,1909 in Marshall,he was the son of the late John Alvin Newell and Neva Brown Newell. On Dec. 20,1937, in Liberty,Mo. he married Martha Shackelford of Glasgow,Mo. who preceded him in death March 15,1991. they had been married for 54 years .After having lived in Kansas City for 35 years, he and his wife returned to Marshall in July 1975. From 1935 to 1939, he was employed by the Corps of Engineers as a worken,foreman and inspector on the Missouri River Work channel improvement project in midwest including the bridge at Miami,Mo. From 1944 to 1956,he was employed as chief engineer of Massman Construction Company working on heavy constuction projects thoughout the United States of Civil Engineers Constuction Engineering Prize for his design of floating caissons for the Yorktown,Virginia bridge From 1956 to 1961,he was employed as vice-president and chief engineer for rhe Kansas City Bridge Company. He was a private consulting engineer from 1962 until his retirement. John attended Marshall Public School and graduated from Marshall High School in 1927. He attended St. John's Military in Delafield, WI from 1927 to 1928, Principia College in St Louis,Mo. from 1928 to 1930 and U.S Military Asademy at Westpoint,NY from 1930 to 1932.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marshall, the 138th Infanty Division of the Missouri National Gaurd, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
Survivors include two sons John Houston Newell of Medford,OR and James Alvin Newell of St Louis,Mo;a grandson and two ganddaughters; two great-granddaughters;a sister Mildred Stauber of St Louis,Mo.; a brother,Dwight Newell of Kansas City,Mo.; and Several nieces and nephews
In Addition to his parents and wife,he was pteceded in death by grandson,David P. Newell and a sister, alice Tutt
