Myrtle D. Oaks, 85, of 14601 NW 140lh, Alachua, Fla., died at 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 1997, at her residence.
Born Aug. 27, 1912, in Estill County, Ky., she was the daughter of John Parker and Hattie Mae (Winkler) Stone. She married Jesse Oaks on Nov. 9, 1935, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1982. She had lived in Laurel since 1924, moving to Florida from 1976 - 1984. She then moved back to Laurel from 1984 - 1995, before returning to FIorida. She was a 1933 graduate of Laurel High School. She was retired from the Laurel Post Office after 28 years of service as a clerk and officer-in-charge. She was a member of the Laurel Christian Church and a 50-year member of the Laurel-Brookville O.E.S. She was also a member of the Laurel Homemakers Club and the Missionary Society at the Laurel Christian Church. '
Surviving are a daughter: Joyce Oaks of Alachua, Fla.; a sister: Lorena (Mrs. Clarence) Bulmer of Laurel; a half-brother: John Stone of Connersville; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter and three brothers.
Services are 1 p.m. Sunday at the Moster & Cox Mortuary in Laurel with Terry Cochran officiating. Burial is at the Laurel North Cemetery. Visitation is 6 - 8 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.
