The following story is from Mary Meeker Zoller. Seth came to Bloomington, Wisconsin Territory, hoping
to make a new home here. He signed the book of settlers on 25 June 1845. He then returned to Ohio
where his daughter was born. The child died and also his wife. He then returned to the now new state of
Iowa in early 1848 bringing his two little boys with him. In June of 1843 the Oaks family with their 7 younger children moved to Cedar Township in Muscatine County, Iowa. We think that they were accompanied by Eva Fry and her two daughters. Eve divorced Reuban Fry because he was unkind to Eve and the girls, however we do not know if this was before or after moving to Muscatine County, Iowa. In 1848 Eve Fry was working at the Commercial Hotel in Muscatine to support herself and her two little girls. It was here that Seth Gates came to stay while working as a brick mason in Muscatine. After becoming acquainted with Eve, Seth asked her to marry him, telling her that he needed a wife and mother for his sons. Eve told him that she would give him a answer in two weeks. At the end of two weeks Eve said yes, and they were married and moved with their combined family to Lowell, Wisconsin, where their first three children were born. In October 1853 they moved back to Cedar Township in the Sand Prairie area. Later they purchased their own homestead approximately half way between Cranston and Oak Grove in Cedar Township. Seth farmed this land and in 1874 replaced their log home with a beautiful brick home which nestled against the hillside. He piped a spring into the house which flowed through a ground level room they called the tap-room. From there it flowed on out to a separate little house where milk was kept cool, called the milk house.
