Mr. Abbott was a Union Civil War veteran. He enlisted at Binghamton, New York as a private in the 15th U.S. Infantry (Regular Army) on March 4, 1862. He is described as age 19, farmer, 5' 5" tall with brown hair, blue eyes, and a ruddy complexion.
The 15th U.S. Infantry served under generals George Thomas and William Tecumseh Sherman. By the end of the Civil War, the regiment had fought in 22 major engagements, including Chattanooga, Chickamauga, Murfreesboro, and Atlanta.
Mr. Abbott served an additional three years in the army from 1867 - 1870 rising to the rank of First Sergeant of Company I, 4th U.S. Artillery Regiment.

Mr. Abbott was in Oregon by 1880 and served as Commander of Astoria GAR Post 14 of the GAR.

Robert Abbott of Warrenton, a veteran of the Civil and Modoc Indian wars, died at the hospital at 2:30 this morning following an extended illness as the result of a stroke of paralysis.
He was born at Broomtown, N. Y., on May 31, 1845, and was past 76 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Abbott enlisted as a private in Company B of the 15th New York Infantry on March 4, 1862, and participated in a number of engagements. Later he served with distinction in the campaign against the Modoc Indians. He came to Clatsop county more than 50 years ago.
