BROADDUS, MINNIE ALTA TAYLOR "GRANNY," 97, passed away Saturday, August 1, 2009 at her home in Prospect, KY.
She was born August 23, 1911 in Harrods Creek, KY to her mother, Julia Etta McAfee Taylor and her father, James T. Taylor, a businessman, farmer and developer of James T. Taylor subdivision in Prospect.
She graduated from Central High School in Louisville and obtained undergraduate degrees from Fisk University and Hampton University and a master's degree in library science from Indiana University. Minnie Alta started her teaching career in 1932 at Central High School, where she taught English and became head librarian, retiring in 1973. She was beloved by many former students who remember her with fondness.
She was married for 38 years to the love of her life, Stenson E. Broaddus Sr., who died in 1977. She also was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, May Etta; and her brother, James S. Taylor.
She is survived by her sons, Stenson E. Broaddus Jr. and Charles Anthony Broaddus; her grandchildren, James Taylor Broaddus (Cassandra), Rachel Lauren Broaddus and Alta Suzanne Broaddus; and a host of other treasured family and friends. To family and friends and those who knew her well, Minnie Alta served as a Christian example of unconditional love, support and encouragement.
She worked tirelessly in church and community organizations. In her early life she was an active member of Harrods Creek Baptist Church and in 1952 joined her husband's church, Coke Memorial United Methodist Church. She served in multiple capacities there and in United Methodist Women, Church Women United and National Conference of Christians and Jews. She has been active in Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the Louisville Urban League and held a lifetime membership in the NAACP. She was a founding member of Mother Dears Club, an enrichment program for African-American children, later incorporated into Jack and Jills of America.
Funeral: noon Wednesday at Coke Memorial United Methodist Church, 428 E. Breckinridge St., with interment following at Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation: 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at A.D. Porter and Sons Funeral Home, 1300 W. Chestnut St.
