Son of Samuel and Christina Miller Gibbons. Matriculated at the Georgia Military Institute in Marietta in 1862, and was soon after detailed to help with the building of fortifications around Atlanta, and to guard POWs. Left GMI in August 1863 and matriculated at the Virginia Military Institute, the third son of Samuel and Christina Gibbons to do so. Resigned from VMI near the end of December 1863, having spent more time on military details than in the classroom. Returned to Georgia and enlisted in Co. G, 1st Georgia Cavalry, CSA. His exploits are well-documented in his booklet (31 pages), The Recollections of An Old Confederate Soldier (1913). He married twice and, with his first wife, had eight children. His second marriage to Casandra Boone, produced four children.
