The following information was submitted by Mariellen Curtis (49306019):

Basil Hollis Brown was born April 22, 1840 to Elizabeth Phillips Brown, two months after the death of his father Bazzell Hollis Brown. By December of 1846, Basil’s mother also died. The loss of both parents early in life resulted in a difficult and transient youth. Following his participation in the Civil War in the Confederate Army, Basil married Clarinda Covington, a widow with three children in 1865; they had three children. In 1870, Basil left his family in Alvord, TX. In 1872, Basil married Charlotte Catherine Gibson and was father to seven children. In 1916, Basil wrote a brief memoir of his life that provides insight into the many jobs Basil held and his unfortunate addiction to opium.
