d Wed, 6th instant in NY City, eldest s/o Joseph MECHLIN, Esq, of this city; abt 10 yrs ago, appointed by Bd of Managers of American Colonization Society, colonial physician & on death of Dr RANDALL, rec'd his commission as Governor of the colony. In discharging the duties of that difficult station, his health became impaired, appearingly never regained health lost in African colony; returned to US, moved to Mobile, continuing to practice medicine; while rendering service to others "disease seized upon himself,"-- in hope of recovery, he started on a visit to his father's house in Washington DC, but died the day after his arrival in NY, before reaching home; surv include young wife...Obit pub 26 Feb 1839, Washington Daily National Intelligencer p3 DEATHS (excerpts):

JOSEPH MECHLIN, Esq, 68, -d Feb 25th AM; long suffered from asthma, then most violent attack ever occurred, when news came of son Dr Joseph Jr's death in New York on 02 Feb; funeral service on Wed, 27th at 11 AM from late home nr the West Market; had moved from Philadelphia to this city w/the General Gov't in 1800, faithfully & efficiently discharged the duties of the office of the 4th Auditor of US Gov'n; much esteemed as neighbor & friend; surv: include widow & chr

Joseph Sr originally bur in Public Vault at Congressional Cem, on 27 May 1840, moved to current location, no stone appears to remain among the old, worn stones.

Birth surname spelling was probably MECHLING, the spelling used by his Grandfather Jacob MECHLING of German speaking European country, arrived Philadelphia PA in 1728.
