Vietnam Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Army and was a casualty of the Vietnam War. Corpal Matthew Peterson was a native of Florence, South Carolina, graduating from Wilson High School in 1968. Shortly after graduation he was drafted into the Army through the Selective Service during the Vietnam War. He started his tour on March 19, 1969, serving with Company D, 196th Light Infantry, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry unit. He was a Lights Weapons Infantry Specialist. Peterson was killed through hostile action, with multiple fragmentation wounds in the Republic of Vietnam. He and others from Florence who were casualties of the war was erected in Florence with a temporary memorial with their names inscribed. He was also posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and his name is inscribed on Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington, DC.
