John Coppins was born in England, immigrated to Canada where his sons Francis and Edwin were born in 1850 and 1852. His first wife was Sarah Woods Coppins who also was born in England. He moved to Buffalo in 1852 and married Mary Ann Dowd from Ireland. They had several other children who were born in Buffalo. John and his sons were well known painters in Buffalo. He and his son, Frank, were very active in the Methodist church.
