Ruth Ella, daughter of David S. and Mary M. Martin was born on the family homestead in Odessa Township, Jewell county, December 17, 1891 and after a brief illness, passed away at her home in Lebanon, the evening of May 22, 1958 at the age of 66 years, five months and five days.

On April 23, 1912 she and Lester LeRoy Barnett, who lived with his family nearby, were united in marriage at Mankato, Kas. Three children were born to this union: LoVona Myrle, LeRoy David and Bernice Evelyn. The family made their home in the Odessa community until 1952 when they moved to their home in Lebanon.

Ruth had musical talent which she freely gave in school, church and community programs. Her beautiful alto voice has been heard on many occasions, such as this. At the close of her day’s work she enjoyed playing the piano and singing her favorite songs and hymns.

She was a charter member of the Odessa Ladies Aid, joining when but a young girl. In 1951 those who were able to attend were given a gold pin by this organization. She was baptised by the Rev. J. D. Lamb and was a member of the Odessa church.

In later years her family was a pride and joy to her. She dearly loved her grandchildren and attended many of their activities. She loved to work with trees and flowers and to be out of doors. After her family was grown she cared for many in their homes who were aged and ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William J. and Lee D.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Lester; children, LoVona and husband Glenn; LeRoy; Evelyn and husband Rufus. Grandchildren Glendowlyn Myrle and husband Roger; Glenda Lee, Glenn Jr., Neil and Gail; two sisters, Elva Pettis of California and Goldie Griffith of Colorado; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Memorial services were held at the Odessa church Monday, May 26 at 2 pm Rev. Loren Silsby was officiating clergy.

Interment was in the Odessa cemetery.

This was her favorite poem:
Paths
Show me the paths. Dear Lord, today
Where in my feet should go
The kindly path where I may soothe
The straight clean path where I may be
A light to all I see
That I may lead aright the feet
Of those who follow me
Unselfish paths of duty lie
Around us every day
Forgetting self help me to find
The Higher, better way.
Show me the quiet path of peace
Where snow white lilies bloom
The path that leads to Heaven's gate
And my Eternal home.
