At age eleven, George was adopted by Ed and Obedience Ragsdale who had moved to the area from Henrico County, VA. Although the Ragsdales had no children of their own, they raised George. After the death of the Ragsdales, George inherited their farm where he and his wife Harriet Ray Thompson raised 10 children.
George's wife Harriet, along with four of their children and his adoptive parents, is buried in Thompson Cemetery #1 which is located a couple of miles to the SE from Hudson Cemetery.
