Charles B. Cropper, 62, passed away at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, with his wife at his side, of complications from pneumonia. He battled lung cancer for 13 months. Cropper was the son of Charles D. Cropper and M. Evelyn Cropper Storer. He was born June 19, 1946, in Maysville, Ky.
He is survived by his loving wife, Terri (Titus) Cropper, married June 9, 1985; his four children, Michele Cropper Boxleitner (Scott), Gregory Cropper (Rose), Ryan Compton (Kim), and Holly Cropper (Jason); his brother, Anthony H. (Tony) Cropper (Peggy); and six grandchildren, Zachary, Hunter, Tyler, Autumn, Logan and Evan. He is further survived by his aunt, Bertha Ring; and his two cousins, Donald Francis Ring and R. Kenton Ring, all of Maysville, Ky.; niece, Chrystal Childers, Lawrenceburg, Ky.; in addition to other nieces and nephews, including Jennifer, Anthony, Sarah and Rachel.
Cropper served as a veteran of the Vietnam era in the Air Force as a sergeant. Cropper served from 1964 to 1968. During that time, he also was a broadcaster on the Armed Forces Radio Network.
Cropper joined radio station WWKI in 1969. Shortly after, he began hosting the popular program "Male Call" with co-host Dick Bronson. Male Call is a public affairs program that recently celebrated its 10,000th broadcast.
On July 30, 1987, Gov. Robert Orr appointed Charlie Cropper a "Distinguished Hoosier." The next day, Kokomo Mayor Steven Dailey issued a proclamation, naming it "Charlie Cropper Day" in the city of Kokomo.
On Sept. 5, 2001, Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton honored Cropper by commissioning him a "Kentucky Colonel."
After the passing of Jan Buechler in 2006, Cropper served as president of We Care, a local charity organization he helped to establish in 1973. We Care serves the community of Kokomo and surrounding areas by supporting the local charities of the Salvation Army, the Kokomo Rescue Mission, and the Kokomo Tribune sponsored Goodfellows.
Cropper was a member of St Patrick's Catholic Church, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and a former member of the Howard County Jaycees.
Cropper was an avid boater and enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He hosted an annual boat poker run on the Ohio River to benefit We Care.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Earl K. Storer; and one sister, Lilian K. Gast.
Services celebrating Charlie's life are 8 p.m. Friday at Oakbrook Community Church, 3409 S. 200 West, with Pastor Bruce Mughmaw officiating. Charlie's many friends in the community are invited to call from noon until 8: p.m. Friday at Oakbrook Church.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1229 N. Washington St., with the Rev. Fr. David Hasser the celebrant. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to We Care. Envelopes will be available at the church.
