For several years researchers had added James to Matthew's name. Another cousin Dala ask me some years ago had I ever seen James in any records. As of this date 2012 I have not found any court, land or census that shows James as a name for Matthew Amberson

Information in George Flake's letter to Dr. Draper. It figures that the elder William with his family went on to Pittsburgh "by 1763" (when William Jr. turned 8), while Frances had "made improvements in Amberson Valley by 1763." It might explain better what Mathew "Emberson" was doing on Back Creek, just a few miles further up the Potomac River from Amberson Valley.

Matthew Amberson, Sr. was born in England or Ireland arrived in New Jersey before 1760 and moved to Pennsylvania by 1763.

Matthew married Mary Kelso/Kelsey Cooper November 1762 in Salem, New Jersey.

Matthew and Mary had the following children:

Mathew Jr.;
Rebecca.

Matthew left and went to Rockingham County, North Carolina as he is listed on 1790 census. He and family moved to Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina after November 24, 1794 and lived there for the remainder of their lives. All were Presbyterian and came from Ireland, whether this is original starting point or a stop on the way to America, is questionable, some information leads to England as the origin of the family.
