Thelma Pruitt attended Oregon State College and Oregon Normal School, and worked as a school teacher up until her marriage. She married Lee James Barnum on 11 Feb 1933 in Vancouver, Washington and they had two children. Following the untimely death of her husband, in 1948, she opened an upholstery shop in Lake Oswego, Oregon, and she and her brother Norman operated it for several years. Later, she began selling real estate and continued in that profession until her death, including a number of years as a broker and co-owner of Lurcott and Barnum Real Estate.
