A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 1, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 2 as a private with Co. D, 46th Pennsylvania Infantry, and immediately tabbed as the company's 1st sergeant. However, he was reduced to sergeant ca. May 1862 at his request but apparently (service records are unclear) re-promoted to 1st sergeant ca. January 1863. He was then promoted to 2nd lieutenant to date August 4, 1863, receiving the commission at Kelly's Ford, Virginia. Fatally shot through the right side of the chest in action at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia, during the Atlanta campaign, he died owing the regimental sutler $20.15 and and additional $138.00 in personal loans to comrades.
