On December 4, 1861 at Pennsville, OH, William H Sopher enlisted to fight in the Civil War in Captain Stevenson's Co., Company E, 78 Regiment, Ohio Infantry for a period of 3 years. On December 27, 1861, he was appointed as 6th Corporal. For the June 1862 roll call, William was absent because he was sick. On June 26, 1862, William was declared unfit for duty, leaving at Jackson. William was again present for the July 1862 Company Muster Roll. By October 31, 1862, William was 1st Corporal, and he was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on Jan 24, 1863. On September 11, 1863, William went on furlough to Malta, Ohio. He was paid $10.56 for transportation furnished. On Jan 4, 1864, William was mustered out at Vicksburg, Mississippi and then on Jan 5, 1864 he remustered by virtue of reenlistment as Veteran Volunteer under Provision G.O. Number 191 Series 1863 from the War Department. On April 7, 1864 William took leave, returning again to his regiment May 7, 1864. On July 22, 1864, William was killed in action near Atlanta, Georgia, while being commanded by Captain W W McCarty and Lieutenant Col G T Niles. (Civil War Military Records, National Archives).
